My fashion internship experience + how to become an intern?

It has been roughly 2 weeks since I walked out of the office that was my working temple for past two and a half months. Having an internship in a fashion tech company was such an experience which I will share with you – adding a bit of advice an tips on how to find a internship and raise your chances to get it!

Internship at combyne was my first fashion internship ever. Since I am studying Fashion Management at the moment, I was looking particularly for a fashion job, not necessarily in Sweden. I happened to find a fashion tech company that was looking for a fashion intern – seemed like a great idea since I had no idea about fashion tech products and I got super interested in the whole concept and the idea. Two Skype calls later, I had a new job and  moving ahead of me – to Munich, Germany, the cities where I didn’t know a single person!

Now after 10 weeks of working full time I can say that it was such a great experience!  I got into the friendliest team ever with amazing young people who live their ideas. At first, working in one office seemed like a very crowded space but turned out to be motivating and a great source of information. Having access to what others are doing gave me a nice perception on the whole concept and the process how the product was/is developed. Few weeks after I joined combyne they took me with them to re:publica TEN in Berlin (a huge tech conference) which I am so grateful for, it was amazing!

My tasks as fashion intern were a lot of fun, good amount of responsibility and so creative – I was a stylist and curator most of the time (choosing what goes into the app), got included a bit into social media and was responsible  for Influencer Marketing which was a great experience from a blogger perspective, I learnt so much! I have to say that this internship was a big deal for me – I wanted to see how much I can do, what are my abilities, qualities and what am I still missing on and could improve.

The downside of the internship was being unpaid which I accepted from the beginning, knowing that I will spend the same amount of money if I would stay in Sweden. Also, the internship gave me 15 ECTS points (internship was in my Master program) and a base for a summer research, as well as a great and much needed experience. However, I decided that this was my last unpaid job since I also did a lot of volunteering before, being almost 24 feels like I want to be paid from now on.

I absolutely enjoyed my time at combyne, it was a great working place for a first internship and allowed me to show my abilities and qualities! And now…I am looking forward to even more challenging opportunities!

TIPS ON HOW TO FIND AND GET AN INTERNSHIP YOU WANT!

HOW TO FIND IT?

  • Fashion internships worth of application can usually be find on fashionunited.com (be aware of the fact that you can choose a country depending on where you are searching for)
  • LinkedIn (jobs search section) is also a great place where you can search for an internship from any field and industry and also a place were you can be searched!
  • If you like a particular brand, check their website– most of the brands list free position or contact for job application somewhere on their web
  • if there is no jobs offered, I would still recommend sending your CV and Cover Letter – you never know if they just got a spot opened or just didn’t think of putting it online yet, it’s worth it!

INCREASE YOUR CHANCES TO GET HIRED!

  • Great (not good) CV and Cover Letter are the first thing someone will read about you, after your polite email in which you shortly explain what are you sending and why. Both of these are crucial and decide if you will get an interview. If you need help, there is usually a career service at any university or in the city, as well as online advisory and websites with example. Just remember – cover letter explains why you want the job and what can you bring into the company while CV is a list of your qualities and abilities.
  • Create a LinkedIn profile and make sure it’s well done – you can often be searched there and it shows you are professional and know the business platforms.
  • Prepare for the interview. I cannot even tell how important this is. Already in Cover letter it should be shown that you learnt something about the company but for the interview, make sure you know who, what, where, how and why about the company – your interest will be recognized!
  • Show your qualities – answer emails regularly, be polite, be reliable and show that you are taking it seriously before you even got a job! And…make sure you are relaxed and positive, don’t let the stress and fear ruin you (everyone was in your shoes once :)
  • Ask smart questions! Being uninterested or too shy to ask questions won’t really leave a good impression – pick good questions for the first interview, such as “How does a typical day in a company look like?”, “Can you tell me about the team I will be working with?”, “What are the companies goals in short and long period of time?”

SAVJETI KAKO PRONAĆI I DOBITI STRUČNU PRAKSU!

Hope you had a fun time reading my short internship story and got some inspiration, motivation and information! :) Let me know if you have any recent experiences or plans, I would love to hear them!

Have a nice day!

xoxo
