TRAVEL WITH ME: COPENHAGEN WEEKEND GETAWAY

Where to go?

Something that shouldn’t be missed in Copenhagen is Nyhavn, the long canal with all the pretty, colourful houses! That is a must. We enjoyed it both during the day and in the evening (fairy lights make it super romantic). One of the things I did when I visited Copenhagen for the first time 3 years ago was a boat ride that goes from Nyhavn and gives you an amazing overview of the city from the water – totally worth it and it will also take you to the Mermaid statue!

Another beautiful (and very close) part is of course, the city centre with all the shopping streets. It’s a perfect place to take a walk, stop for fika (coffee and something sweet) or get some souvenirs. Very close to the city center you will find one of the most beautiful botanical gardens I have ever seen (free entrance) with a glass pavilion, again one of the charming spots. If your are up for meeting the Danish royals as we were this time, it is absolutely worth it to visit Copenhagen Parliament. There are a couple of museums around but the best part is definitely the Christiansborg Palace which is still used when queen of Denmark has a party :). There is also an official Royal Palace on another location, however, Christiansborg is just breath-taking.

Since the new bridge that connects Nyhavn to another side was finished a couple of years ago, it is definitely worth of seeing, and crossing. There you will find the stunning Opera House, Church Of Our Saviour with the coolest tower ever and the most special thing about Copenhagen – Christiania. I will not reveal too much, it’s enough to warn you never to use a camera or the phone inside because you might loose it!

To visit all of these locations, if the weather is good, I absolutely recommend renting an electing bike as a real Dane. You will be fast and you will see so much more!

What (and where) to eat?

Krenimo s doruckom. Moj osobni favorit su danska razna punjena peciva. Kunem se, prefina su! Apsolutno najbolje cete jesti u Lagkagehuset pekarnici gdje mozete i sjesti i popiti kavu. Ako trebate brzinski dorucak, a ovo nije usput, uvijek mozete svratiti do skandinavskog lanca kafica (iako ne naseg klasicnog) Espresso House-a. Tamo cete pronaci razne zdrave verzije dorucka, ali i one manje zdrave.

Tamo cete dozivjeti tipicni danski interijet i jesti tradicionalni danski smørrebrød, tanki razeni kruh s maslacom i raznim dodacima. Moji favoriti su s jajima i skampima, haringom i lososom!

Odlican restoran s preukusnim lososom cete jesti u The Olive Kitchen and Bar restoranu u koji se mi uvijek volimo vratiti.

Let’s start from breakfast. My personal breakfast favourite is Danish pastry. I swear, it’s so good! You will eat ultimately the best Danish pastry in Lagkagehuset where you can also sit and enjoy it with a cup of coffee. If you need a quick breakfast on the go, you can always stop at Espresso House, the Scandinavian chain, where you will find different healthy and a bit less healthy breakfast options. I recommend a Scandinavian classic – carrot cake muffin.

My favourite lunch in Copenhagen is without a doubt in Peder Oxe restaurant, close to the city centre. You will have a true Danish experience there, from the interior design to typical smørrebrød, thin buttered rye bread with different toppings. My faves are egg & shrimps, haring and and salmon! Besides that, one of my favourite places is Copenhagen Street Food. There you will find literally anything, from Danish, Swedish, Norwegian to Indian, Moroccan, Turkish, Korean etc. The prices are really great and the food is just amazing. Oh and don’t forget the mojito at the entrance, passion fruit one is delish!

Even though you could technically eat dinner at Street Food too, try some of the downtown restaurants. An amazing restaurant with delicious salmon is The Olive Kitchen and Bar where we always love to go back.

What is good to know?

Scandinavian countries are using cash less and less. While you can pay with it anywhere, you don’t have to be afraid if you don’t have any, you can pay by card almost everywhere and even where you think you won’t be able to. However, a credit card might be a problem, pin code is preferred! Also, the official currency is Danish Krone. A good thing to know is that the weather is VERY unstable in Scandinavia in general. Umbrella is a great thing to have! The wind can be pretty uncomfortable too.

One important thing to say is – Copenhagen is far away from affordable city. Check before you book :) Air B’n’B is a good option for accommodation if you don’t want to stay in fancy hotels. And Uber is not very popular in Copenhagen so don’t rely on it!

If you have extra time

Otidjite do Svedske!

Go to Sweden! It takes roughly 25 minutes by train from the central station in Copenhagen. It’s a great opportunity to visit an extra country in a day.

Talking about central station, there is an awesome fun park called Tivoli which is a good way to rest from all city tours and just have fun, especially if you are with kids. Rosenborg Castle is also a good idea and so is the amazing Fredriks Kirke (The Marble Church).

And on you way to or from Copenhagen? Read about hygge, the reason why Danes are the happiest nationality in the world!
